Title: Ubik Best Practices and Failure Modes
Abstract:
Ubik and the services built on Ubik are particularly important to the operation of a healthy AFS cell. This presentation gives a brief background on Ubik and then examines the Ubik-based services in OpenAFS, paying particular attention to "what can go wrong, why things go wrong, and how to handle failures?" in both the vldb and prdb, including a walkthrough of various utilities for checking the health of Ubik-based databases. Specific analogies will be made with RDBMS-based designs, which will help participants understand how many of the common problems relate to referential integrity and/or database replication management.
